Over these six weeks — in which Maya assisted the Compliance team, Dorothy the Events and Marcomms team, Amelia the Responsible Sourcing team, and Spencer the Good Delivery (GDL) team — they gave us their honest feedback regarding the experience, which we have compiled below:

Meaningful Projects in an Encouraging Environment
Many of our interns admitted that, prior to joining, they expected the placement to be a formal, work-only affair and to be given more menial, monotonous tasks with minimal impact. However, they were quickly made to feel supported and trusted, striking the perfect balance, as Maya states, “between professional responsibility and mentorship.” She added, “I wasn’t just an observer, I was a contributor.”
Amelia stated that one of her highlights in the Responsible Sourcing team was the “opportunity to engage directly with professionals from across LBMA during collaborative projects and tasks.” Amelia provided valuable contributions to projects such as the ongoing Gold Bar Integrity (GBI) programme.
In assisting the Compliance team, Maya learned how to run risk-based due diligence, how Responsible Sourcing and Good Delivery standards fit into real-life trading, and how compliance work supports market integrity.
Dorothy got hands-on experience across two teams, assisting Marcomms with the publication of the Alchemist 118 and providing the Events team assistance in the lead-up to the LBMA/LPPM Global Precious Metals Conference 2025. Dorothy said of the experience: “Having the opportunity to help out with a publication featuring articles from [precious metals] experts on a variety of topics was very exciting and interesting.” She added: “Joining the Events team has been very insightful in terms of how many intricate details need to be sorted out in order for the Conference to run smoothly.”
Spencer made tangible contributions in the GDL team, examining precious metal flows in order to understand how and why gold and silver move globally. Through this, Spencer developed “a strong, holistic understanding of precious metals space” and “built knowledge of how the Good Delivery team upholds bar standards.”

Practical Experiences and Social Opportunities
The interns joined visits to the Mastermelt and Baird refineries, a trip to Goldsmiths jewellers, a Bank of England museum tour, and live viewings of ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) and London Metal Exchange (LME) auctions.
These in-person visits gave the interns the opportunity to spend some time with their colleagues while making their theoretical understanding of the industry more tangible and bringing their work to life.
Nurturing Progression
Through their valued contributions to LBMA workstreams, Maya, Dorothy, Amelia and Spencer have all developed skills that are sure to serve them well in their future careers.

Maya: “I hope to qualify as a commercial solicitor in London and to work on transactional and commercial law that interfaces with financial markets and commodities. This internship has given me stronger investigative skills and an appreciation for regulatory nuance – both of which are directly relevant to a future in commercial law.”

Dorothy: “Having a deeper understanding of something that the financial markets rely on so deeply will be beyond useful. I hope to continue to be involved with companies such as LBMA that foster a friendly and welcoming environment for their employees and clients whilst being critical players in the industry.”

Amelia: “Throughout the six weeks, I have learned a lot about the bullion markets and the precious metals supply chain, which has given me a desire to learn more. I hope to be able to use the knowledge and skills I’ve gained whilst completing my degree and would love the opportunity to gain further experience working in the precious metals markets.”

Spencer: “I have gained an understanding of LBMA’s role in maintaining market integrity, witnessing its global respect and trust firsthand. I hope to build a career in the metals and mining sector. Currently, I’m considering roles across the value chain — from extraction (since my background is in geology) to the commodity space.”
Thank you to Maya Perrell, Dorothy Banaityte, Amelia Gandy and Spencer Morgan for all your hard work.
